This preliminary study screens whether a porous prototype form could possess some of the suitable mechanical and physical properties beneficial for medical devices requiring some tissue in-growth. Implantable grade PEEK-OPTIMA was fabricated as porous substrates using a proprietary processing technique. To evaluate compressive strength, porous PEEK samples were tested according to ASTM D695/ISO604 and Dynamic fatigue test ASTM F2077-03-Test method for intervertebral body fusion devices. Porosity was evaluated using mercury porosimetry and pynometryTo assess cytocompatibility, in vitro cell cultures were used. These initial studies showed that porous PEEK materials could be manufactured with mechanical and physical characteristics suitable for some orthopedic applications. Further development is ongoing to evaluate industrial suitability.
